pink eye and errant lashes

it finally has a name!!

two days ago, i went to aces eye referral clinics at perpertual soccour hospital to have my eyes examined by professionals. i opted to visit this clinic because i detest going to optical clinics. going to optical clinics is tantamount to you going out of the clinic with an additional pair of eyes. yeah, their universal solution to your eye problem is to get a pair of glasses, which they conveniently call "corrective lenses".

as soon as my name was called, i had the routine vision check. had the computerized exam to see if i have problems seeing things from a distance. then, the lady had me read the snellen chart. instead of the regular chart pasted on the wall, aces made use of a projector to flash part of the snellen chart on a white wall. the procedure freaked me out a little bit as i had dificulty making out the letters on the wall.

after testing visual acuity, i was referred to a dr. t. he did some more tests and discovered two errant lashes on my lower lid. the lashes often rub against my eyeball causing it to turn red, and get irritated. dr. t said that he could pull out the two errant lashes, but in a month’s time, the lashes will just grow back. thus, he advised me to visit aces’ other clinic over at velez hospital to see a dr. r.m.

dr. r.m. read the chart that aces perpetual had me give him. he asked me a few questions and checked my eyes. as soon as he finished the exam. he asked some more questions. the questioning was quite funny as dr. r.m. himself admitted to not knowing what’s causing the redness in my right eye. the errant lashes on my lower left lid, somehow could explain why my left eye is often red. however, r.m. said that he couldn’t quite pinpoint what’s causing the redness in my eyes and the errant lashes were just incidental. the best culprit according to him is allergens such as dust, pollen, smoke, strong perfume and others more.

dr. r.m. told me that the errant lashes actually has a name. it’s called "trichiasis." as to the overall condition of my eye; my symptoms all point to having conjunctivitis.

Trichiasis is an uncornfortable condition in which the eyelashes are misdirected toward the eyeball and scratch its surface, the cornea. The position of the lower lid is normal, but the lashes point in the wrong direction. This may cause infection and scarring of the cornea. Bacterial conjunctivitis is a type of eye infection commonly known as pink eye.  The typical symptoms are:  red eye(s), purulent (pus) discharge, gritty sensation, and the eyelids may be stuck shut in the morning.  Vision is not affected. This is also called "pink eye." [http://www.eyemdlink.com/Condition.asp?ConditionID=490]

as to the errant lashes, dr. r.m. cauterized the two errant lashes. after the less than 15-minute procedure, my left eye felt weird and heavy. it also felt a little bit numb because of the anesthesia. i was given an antibiotic eyedrops to prevent infection. hopefully, the lashes will not grow back. lastly, dr. r.m.’s assistant gave me another type of eyedrops to remedy the redness of my eyes.

i have an appointment to see dr. r.m. again, this saturday to check if my eyes are responding to the drops that were prescribed to me.
